The Kočevje-Ribnica region

The Kočevje-Ribnica region is the highest part of Dolenjska. Its advantages for hikers are numerous footpaths in intact nature, the vast area Nature 2000 and the forests where brown bears, wolves and lynxes live. The natural richness of this region fascinates visitors at every step.

The life of people in these parts has always been varied. The Kočevje-Ribnica region is marked by handicrafts (woodenware and pottery), the Kočevje villages, the water coverage, and numerous culinary treats. The long and interesting tradition has left a mark to this day, thus the most resounding events are still the Ribnica Fair, the cultural and ethnological event »Tamburanje v Kostele« and the Fair Day in Sodražica. If you have an opportunity, visit them and learn about the cultural heritage of one of the richest Slovenian regions.

Ribnica

Ribnica is one of the oldest Slovenian settlements and has a rich history. Visitors are greeted from afar by the two bell towers of the Ribnica Church of St. Stephen. They were built according to the plans by the famous architect Jože Plečnik. Many important Slovenians were born in the Ribnica Valley. The composer Jakob Petelin Gallus, the patron of Slovenian intelligentsia Luka Knafelj, the linguist Stanislav Škrabec, and Janez Evangelist Krek, other famous people also left important marks here.

We recommend you to visit the renovated Mikl House with the frequently visited library and the Handicraft Centre with a gallery and museum. You may be attracted to the Ribnica Castle with an ethnological museum or the Škrabec Homestead.

The traditional crafts for which Ribnica is best known can be seen in the town’s workshops. Do not miss numerous cultural, ethnographic and other events, such as the Ribnica Fair of Woodenware and Pottery, the Handicraft Festival, St. Nicholas Celebration, the Live Christmas Crib, Farm Games at Velike Poljane, the New Year’s Concert …
